A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE LIBRARY

The library was founded at the same time as the Ethnographic and Folklore Institute, in the 1934-35 academic year. The collection began with purchases, donations, and bequests.

The library's collection scope:

Hungarian and foreign language literature, journals and periodicals belonging to the subject areas of Hungarian and comparative folkloristics, material ethnography and cultural anthropology.

A reading room of more than one hundred square meters with a seating capacity of forty is available to the teachers and students of the institute. In the reading room, in addition to the manuals, the mandatory and recommended literature is placed on free shelves. Hungarian and foreign journals and yearbooks can be found in the gallery of the reading room. We sometimes organize smaller, institute exhibitions here. The library provides a place for scientific conferences organized by the institute, book presentations, tea parties launched by the HÖK and other professional events.

Collections:
The Institute's library collection includes certain manuscripts and a collection of jokes from the legacy of Associate Professor Imre Katona, as well as the legacy of István Tálasi, Lajos Takács and Oszkár Lázár.Professor Gyula Ortutay's scientific book collection, consisting of 14,000 volumes, is also located here, and is currently being processed. The processed part of the collection can already be searched in the online catalogue. The books in the Ortutay collection cannot be borrowed, they can only be used on site.

In addition to printed documents, the collection includes an archive, the so-called MANUSCRIPT, which contains manuscripts from previous ethnographic collections (e.g. the 1848-1948 centennial collection and the Budapest collection) and legacies, as well as theses and dissertations submitted to the departments
The total size of the collection is approximately 53,000 volumes.
