ABOUT US
The Institute of East Asian Studies Library was established in 2008 with the creation of the Institute of East Asian Studies. The Library's holdings were built up from the book collections of the departments belonging to the Institute (the Chinese Department, the Japanese Department, the Korean Department the Mongolian and Inner Asian Studies Departments, and later the Department of Buddhology and Tibetology) and currently number around 50,000 volumes.
In 2001, the Library's East Asian collections moved to their present location in the basement of the main building of the Faculty of Humanities (Múzeum krt. 6–8). In the new premises, a spacious reading room with a capacity of 24 people and two computers for readers was created in addition to the storage area at the back. The collection of the Department of Mongolian and Inner-Asian Studies remained in its original location on the floor of the building 4/B. With the expansion of the Institute, the libray has been growing too. In 2012, the Budapest Centre for Buddhist Studies was established followed by the Department of Buddhology and Tibetology in 2019 (both located in the building 4/B). In 2019, the Window on Korea Special Collection was created with the help of the National Library of Korea's (NLK).
Only the Institute's staff and the students of the majors taught at the Institute are entitled to borrow from the Library, but the basic services and the on-site reading service are available to anyone.

The Library's collection (and with it the East Asian Collection) was based on the books (mainly on Chinese and Japanese subjects) of the Department of East Asian Studies (later the East Asian Institute), founded in 1923. Unfortunately, during the Second World War, the Institute's book collection was almost completely destroyed, and collection building had to be started from scratch. This was given a big boost by the proclamation of the People's Republic of China and the rise of Hungarian-Chinese cultural relations. The People's Republic of China contributed to the expansion of the library's holdongs with substantial donations of books. Our library is currently participating in the Shanghai Library's "Window on Shanghai" book donation programme and has been awarded the "Library Acquisition Grant" from the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation in Taiwan on several occasions.
Major additions to the Japanese collection began after the establishment of diplomatic relations in the late 1950s. The Japan Foundation and the Komatsu Chikō Foundation have supported the development of the library ever since. The Korean collection was based on 2–300 volumes of books received from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the 1950s and 1960s. Since the second half of the 1990s, our library has been continuously supported by the Korea Foundation of South Korea through its book donation programme. In October 2020, we inaugurated the Korean Studies Reading Room at the Korean Studies Department of the National Library of Korea's "Window on Korea" book donation project. The core of the Southeast Asian collection was formed by the few hundred volumes we received from the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in the 1970s, supplemented by a donation of books from János Jelen in the early 2000s.
The collection also contains significant book bequests: the book bequests of Ferenc Tőkei (1930–2000), Ildikó Ecsedy (1938–2004), and Professor Fukuda Hideichi (1932–2006), as well as the books on East Asia by Béla Éliás, former MTI correspondent in Beijing (about 7,000 volumes in total).
